Bardo: When the Future Has No Map

When you are between identities inside a world between eras

There is a word in the Tantric and Buddhist traditions that I find increasingly useful for understanding our time:

Bardo.

A Bardo is an in-between state.

Something has ended, dissolved, or stopped being true, but what comes next has not fully taken form yet.

We tend to associate transformation with becoming something new. But there is often a strange territory between identities, relationships, careers, businesses, countries, ways of living, even entire historical eras.

You can feel it in your bones: I am no longer who I used to be.

But you cannot quite see who exactly you are becoming.

And I believe many of us are living there now.

Personally, collectively, civilizationally.

We tend to attach ourselves to certain structures as reference points. That is often how we orient ourselves and succeed. We learn the landscape, understand its patterns, and make plans based on what we know.

But what happens when the landscape itself is changing?

We are trying to make five-year plans while some of the conditions those plans depend upon may not exist five years from now.

Economies are shifting. Technologies are accelerating. Institutions are changing. Cultural identities are reorganizing. Old assumptions about work, relationships, community and security are becoming less reliable.

And this is where our personal and collective Bardos begin to overlap.

We are changing while the structures we once used to orient ourselves are changing too.

The difficulty is not simply that we don't know who we are becoming. The world in which that future self will live is still taking form.

We cannot really stop creating futures. It is part of our evolutionary human design.

Yet we need to learn to create differently.

Less like architects executing a finished blueprint.

More like living organisms sensing an environment that is changing while we are changing with it.

A Bardo is an opportunity to discover another kind of intelligence: the ability to hold direction without needing certainty.

To experiment without interpreting every failed experiment as failure.

To remain responsive when the original plan no longer matches the conditions around us.

We are living through Bardos inside a larger Bardo. Our identities are shifting while the environments that once helped us form those identities are shifting too.

To inhabit this strange territory, we need to travel lighter.

Have you felt the desire to remove an identity that was once authentically yours, but now fits like an old costume?

If so, let's talk about masks.

A mask is not necessarily false. It can be one of the identities through which we genuinely express ourselves.

Teacher. Mother. Entrepreneur. Lover. Leader. Artist. Healer. Scientist.

They are beautiful instruments of expression.

The danger begins when we forget that we are the one wearing them.

During a Bardo, certain masks stop fitting. And the impulse is often to grab another identity quickly because the nakedness of “I don't know who I am becoming yet” can feel unbearable.

Tantric Bardos invite us into a different relationship with uncertainty.

Uncertainty is not necessarily a mistake. It can be the transition into a new order.

These are thresholds when life may no longer be asking us to improve the previous version.

The cycle itself is breaking. The future branches.

And the next form cannot be entirely predicted from the previous one.

This requires something our culture has not trained particularly well: a more feminine relationship with becoming.

Cyclical rather than relentlessly linear. Responsive rather than controlling. Able to listen, gestate, move, retreat, emerge, change direction, and listen again.

In Bardo, identities can dissolve while something deeper remains.

Beneath the changing masks, we begin to recognize an essence that was never limited to any one of them.

The path might not be visible yet. There may even be multiple possible paths that have not revealed themselves.

That is why we don't rush through Bardos, and we certainly don't need to escape them as quickly as possible.

We learn to become intimate enough with ourselves and responsive enough to the changing world that we can move through uncertainty without abandoning our deeper center.

That is part of what we will explore in Masks & Unmasking: Relational Tantra & Tantric Bardos.

Become conscious and fully alive inside of the in-between states.
